oh wait (doh) one can only open a wormhole if the orbiting "key" and the area around the wormhole have the right amount of density.

no... yoy just need something of half the level of density of the wormhole to open it, I saw this on a sci-fi TV series. I also saw the ship, the Infinity, being pulled into a wormhole at the centre of a sargasso disk.
